HAMLET

Directed by Daniel Winder / Iris Theatre, London / Costume Designer and Maker / May 2019

Iris Theatre’s Hamlet is set in a post-Brexit dictatorship. As the British state crumbles subculture thrives and Hamlet grapples with her own gender identity. The original brief by director Daniel Winder was to reference The Handmaids Tale for the totalitarian state. As designer I took the language of submissive and restrictive garments and altered them to represent the British gentry and used an incorporation of styles and textiles worn by the Queen. For the family I worked in a colour palette of greens, browns, and greys using wools and tweeds to communicate class identities. The Players and the Ghost are part of the masked subculture who were inspired by the likes of Leigh Bowery and the Club Kids as well as current vogue balls.
